The are called River Pearls as they came from the Mississippi River and its tributaries beginning in the late 1800's until plastic buttons replaced them. Towns like Muscatine were considered the "Pearl Button capitals of the world". Unique with some American history. They are white instead of the creamy ocean pearl.
